Welcome
Paul Madore called the meeting to order at 7:10pm and welcomed everyone. There were 22 people were in attendance.
Review past minutes
Minutes from the 2007 AGM were reviewed. Motion to approved by Isabel Wynn, seconded by Yvonne Madore. Minutes approved.
Financial Report
As of September 30 we have $2200 in the ratepayers account. In April of 2009 another $18 000.00 will be added to this account by the HRM. Finances approved.
Social Position Update
Paul Madore gave an update on the social position, which is currently vacant. May need to have events run by volunteers rather than one social convener.
Web Page Update
Paulette Upshall reported on our new web page. It is still under development and can be found at maplewoodonthelakes.ca. We are still looking for content to put on the page. Contact information for the executive will be put on there. It is ok to put on photographs as long as we have consent from the people in them. Total cost is not yet known. The Hammonds Plains website was free but too restrictive for our use. Paulette will be the administrator for the website.
Review of “Salty Dips” Recreation Project
Salty Dips playground officially opened on September 13, 2008 with a community party. It is well used and appreciated by the community. There are still a few minor items to be addressed before completion. There was $36 000.00 contributed by the association, the balance was from donations and grants, with the total cost being $103 000.00.
Mic Mac Park
The old play structure at Mic Mac Park has been removed as it was deteriorating. The HRM has now installed new equipment.
Recreation
There are still two lots left for park development. One lot is off Beaver Lake and the other off Halfway Lake. We need to form a recreation plan. The HRM is sending out a planner to look at the sites and suggest ideas for their use. We are looking for a volunteer for the recreation projects. Sean Litle is currently in this position. We believe we still have 2 benches available to us from HRM. We need to decide where we want to place the benches. We will check to see if Mic Mac Park requires the surplus benches and Paul Madore will respond to the HRM. If we do not use the benches the HRM will take them back.
New Business/Open Floor
- Gina Byrne from Haliburton Hills and Christina Parker from Highland Park discussed Hammonds Plains Community Coalition. They would like to form a coalition to ensure that our collective voices are heard. In order for this to be successful representation is required from all community groups. There will be a meeting called to discuss this further. May be held at the fire hall.
- Student Advisory Council (SAC) needs a new member for Hammonds Plains Consolidated School. Karen Fraser has resigned from this position. Bobby O’Keefe agreed to take on this position.
- No changes to report on the status of water in phase three of Maplewood. Ron Jefferson will meet with Geoff Regan.
- Ratepayers rates – the current rate collected from each lot is $50. Motion to continue the rate at $50 made by Paul Madore, seconded by Gary Russel. Motion approved. None opposed.

MLA Barry Barnett
Barry addressed the meeting. He has been our MLA for 10 years now. Of the 20 000 people he represents Hammonds Plains makes up one third of this number. There has been no new development on a recreation facility for Hammonds Plains. Once a new councillor has been determined he will discuss this issue with them. In the past Barry has worked on school development, Kingswood School, Hammonds Plains Consolidated School and Charles P. Allen replacement high school. Barry commented that having associations makes his job easier.
Christina Parker raised concerns about the speed limit (90km) and lack of lighting along the Hammonds Plains Road near Highland Park. People stand close to the road waiting for buses and CPA students have to cross the busy road. She has a petition with 200 signatures to make changes to this stretch of road. She suggested that this is one of the concerns that can be addressed at the Coalition meeting. Barry suggests that we take this up with our new councillor.
If you wish to contact Barry Barnett use his government email address or call him at home 864-8666. (Office #864-8669). Barry’s goal is to get back to people as quickly as possible.
Councillor
We were unable to open the floor to a councillor at this time as a recount of votes has been called and no one has been currently sworn into this position. Peter Lund and Gina Byrne were both in attendance.
Close
Motion to adjourn made by Yvonne Madore, seconded by Isabell Wynn.
Meeting adjourned at 8:34pm.
Minutes taken by Peter Molenaar and Michele Boone, typed by Jane Molenaar.
