June 2006

President’s Message: Ron Jefferson 835-0018

I would like to wish everybody a safe and happy summer. (I know we will have one after the rain stops.) There is not much to report as summer is now upon us. There is work going on in the Patterson Park which will help out the whole community and will be celebrated in September. Hope to see you there.
A group of people approached us to use the Patterson Park on Monday nights for T-ball and the executive has given them approval. So play ball and have fun.
If you have any questions or concerns please give me a call @ 835-0018

Water (Ron Jefferson 835-0018)

The second phase of city water is installed and ready for hook up. The Halifax Water Commission is contacting the contractor and requesting them to complete their work and to finish the project (paving).

Recreation Committee Sean Litle 835-1996

The rink/pad item is proceeding. Costs are higher than anticipated so some modifications to original plan will be required. There has been one site meeting reference the BMX bike track but this is dependant on the costing for the pad/rink. HRM is supposed to be working on maintenance items the week of June 12, in our parks.I have heard nothing on the playground equipment application as of yet. (this is the third potential project on the list for Patterson Park)
Please report any damage or safety issues immediately. If you see any unwanted behaviour, report it ASAP.

Student Advisory Council Report – Hammonds Plains Elementary By Karen Fraser

As a response to queries concerning whether Maplewood on the Lakes children will be attending the new high School in Tantallon (replacing the Sir John A. High School) we have contacted the School Board and they have indicated that we are NOT in the boundary and therefore will not be attending the school. Children will continue to go to CPA. Below are
outlines and excerpts from the response which does outline options for attendance at the new school and policies around boundary reviews.

Additionally parents or children can view AIMS (Atlantic Institute for Market Studies) 4th Annual Report Card on Atlantic Canadian High Schools which indicates that CPA ranged 2nd out of the 68 High Schools in Nova Scotia. The report can be accessed at: http://www.aims.ca/aimslibrary.asp?ft=1&fi=1&fd=2006.

Exerpts from School Board Response

Sir John A Macdonald is a replacement school and not a new high school. Therefore, it was built to house the current population at Sir John A. Staff has recommended that there may be a need to do a future boundary review for all schools within the Sir John A Macdonald family if anticipated growth continues in this area. However, there are no plans to do so at this time. Staff has also not looked at doing a boundary review for C.P. Allen. If you wish your child to attend Sir John A Macdonald in September 2006 then you would need to apply as an out-of-area student. The application would need to be picked up at your current school (C.P. Allen) and then taken to Sir John A Macdonald. On June 30, the principal will make a determination as to whether or not there is space to accept your child. However, if accepted,
transportation and lunch arrangements would be your responsibility.

Boundary reviews are established when a new (additional) school is built or there is an overcrowding issue that needs to be addressed. As this is a replacement school and not a new school, there are no plans to do a boundary review at this time.

General Interest

We are attempting to move into the future with our newsletter. We will cease publishing a ‘hard’ copy of the newsletter soon and will only have an electronic ‘soft’ copy to be distributed via e-mail and it will also be available from the webpage at your leisure. Our web page can be found at: www.maplewoodonthelakes.ca
This is being done to save the high cost of printing 300+ copies of the newsletter, to avoid the difficulty of recruiting people to distribute the paper, and the make the whole process more direct and interactive. You will be able to respond immediately to items you see, and you will be able to have links to material contained therein. This event will occur by next spring, after we are able to compile a e-mail distribution list. We ask everyone to send your address to Paul Madore for compilation. THIS LIST WILL ONLY BE USED FOR DISTRIBUTION OF THE NEWSLETTER, AND NOT FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE. IT WILL NOT BE SHARED WITH ANY OTHER GROUP.

WARNING: We have had police reports of a bear sighted in the Cedarcrest area of our neighbourhood in April. No further reports have been heard. Please be cautious when encountering potentially dangerous wildlife.

Lost and Found: Last fall, after a wind storm, a submerged kayak was pulled from Halfway Lake by a concerned neighbour. It was stored for the winter and may be claimed by calling Dave Wheaton @ 835-4853 and describing it to him to prove ownership.

Ron Jefferson @ 835-0018 has found a pedometer/stopwatch. It can be claimed by calling Ron and giving a good description of the item and where it was probably lost.
