October 2006

NOTICE: The Annual General Meeting will be held 15 November, 2006 at 7 PM at the Hammonds Plains Fire Hall on Hammonds Plains Road. Please be there for this very important meeting.

President’s Message:
Ron Jefferson 835-0018

Summer is behind us, which brings the change of seasons and a new colourful one ahead. I would like to thank everyone who helped or attended the Maplewood fun day at Patterson Park in September. Everything was perfect, including the weather.
I would hope that we will have a larger number of people attend our AGM on November 15. In the past the numbers have been between 6 and 10 people. With a base of 300+ homes, this is not the greatest.
Also, I would like to announce that I will be stepping down as President this year and would like to thank everyone who’s helped me over the years. It has been a blast.

People are now and have been hooked up. Awaiting word from the city on the next phase.

The rink at Patterson Park is now in, including 2 nets on site.  There is a possibility for the bike track to be in this year but could be the spring ($ 5000) Budget:  There will be $5000  allocated to park maintenance , mostly for Micmac park,  in next year’s budget There will be a carry forward (assuming the bike park goes next year) of $ 2000 – $ 3000. We will take suggestions from the floor for the remaining funds (approx. $11000). The next parkland we are exploring to develop will be the lake lot on Half way Lake Drive.  It is anticipated it would involve some trails and access to the lake, leaving most trees intact etc. This is in preliminary stages with the HRM.

These lands are set aside for all Maplewood residents to enjoy so we should make them usable as funds allow. As we have different aged people and people with different interests it is probably best if we try and make each parkland unique. There is also a small piece on Beaver Lake but it is swampy and has very limited lake frontage.

PS.  When anyone sees the garbage pails full in any park please call 490-4000
We need two or three chain saws and a few people to do one hour’s work at Patterson Park sometime this fall. Call 835-1996 (Sean) if interested
Please report any damage or safety issues immediately. If you see any unwanted behaviour, report it ASAP.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

An empty shoebox is good for little except recycling, but when that shoebox is filled with toys, candy and other small gifts, it becomes a treasure chest that can bring Christmas joy to some of the world’s neediest children.
Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse and Franklin Graham.   Through this project, children in some of the world’s poorest countries receive shoeboxes filled, with love, by people like you and me.
I guarantee you will find it to be a fun, educational, and rewarding experience you can participate in with your children, at a very low cost, that will give you that ‘warm and fuzzy’ feeling heading into the Christmas season.
If you would like to take part in this project, or learn more about it, please contact Linda Shea-White at 835-6402 before November 7th, 2006.

Newsletter:

We continuously look for community input for our newsletter. If you have an announcement or commentary of benefit to the whole neighbourhood, please forward it to me for inclusion in our next publication. We also have advertising space available. If you are interested contact me for more information.

General Interest

We are attempting to move into the future with our newsletter. We will cease publishing a ‘hard’ copy of the newsletter with this issue and will only have an electronic ‘soft’ copy to be distributed via e-mail. It will also be available from the webpage at your leisure. Our web page can be found at: www.maplewoodonthelakes.ca
This is being done to save the high cost of printing 300+ copies of the newsletter, to avoid the difficulty of recruiting people to distribute the paper, and the make the whole process more direct and interactive. You will be able to respond immediately to items you see, and you will be able to have links to material contained therein. We ask everyone to send your address to Paul Madore for compilation. THIS LIST WILL ONLY BE USED FOR DISTRIBUTION OF THE NEWSLETTER, AND NOT FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE. IT WILL NOT BE SHARED WITH ANY OTHER GROUP.

Consider Hosting a Child from Belarus
The Canadian Relief Fund for Chernobyl Victims in Belarus (CRFCVB) program brings children ages 8 to 16 from Belarus to Canada for health respites in order to reduce the children’s exposure to the radiation contamination in their country. The children stay with host families in Atlantic Canada for 6 or 10 week periods. During their visits the children receive good nutrition, vitamins, dental and medical attention that they so desperately need. Their stay helps them to recover from the on going effects of the nuclear radiation, pervasive in Belarus. The cost to bring the children to Canada is borne by the host families, supplemented by fund raising and charitable donations. This past year costs were $2,000 per child, which covers airfare, visas, health insurance and the cost of interpreters.
Please consider hosting a child. Your help can change a life. The CRFCVB annual general meeting is Oct 28th; applications for hosting are due by Dec. 15. For more information contact
Robyn Litle.

Social Notice!!

The annual Family Christmas skate and party will take place at the St Margaret’s Bay rink on Saturday 09 December from 1-3 PM.  The cost is $10 per family. (This helps pay for the rink and to be able to provide some hot chocolate for refreshments.)  Families are asked to help spread the Christmas spirit by bringing some cookies or other sweets to share with your neighbours. The ice rink is available for the first hour and then around 2 PM everyone is invited to the party room.  Santa will make an appearance and distribute gifts to the children. (Parents please help Santa by wrapping your gift for your child and clearly writing you child’s name on the gift. Thanks.)  We will need some help from parents to settle the children and organize the visit with Santa.

Association Elections:

The Annual General Meeting will occur next month and we are in great need of residents to volunteer to serve on several committees. If you are new to the neighbourhood, this is a wonderful way to become involved, to meet new neighbours and to make new friends quickly. Please consider offering for any of the following positions: Vice President, Secretary, Newsletter coordinator, Social team, Website coordinator, and very importantly, Recreation. If these positions are not filled, those tasks do not get done. Please consider these positions.
This is a great way to have an input into the development of our neighbourhood and to give something back to the community. Thanks.

WARNING: There have been further reports of a bear sighting within our neighbourhood and as recently as Saturday, 14 October, there was a confirmed television report of a bear in the trailer park on Lucasville Road. Please be aware of this wild animal and DO NOT APPROACH IT! Report it to the police or wildlife officials immediately.
