Spring 2008

Paul Madore 835-8366

This will be my last newsletter as I will be stepping down as president due to our upcoming move later this summer. It has been a wonderful experience to serve in this capacity over many years, to meet so many of our neighbours and to be able to participate in the projects that have enhanced this neighbourhood. I strongly encourage all of you to consider becoming a part of this Resident’s Association to give your thoughts and ideas and to help it grow through new projects for the betterment of all.

Before I leave I must again stress some recurring complaints that I hear. First is to remind everyone who owns a dog that they must keep their pet on a leash at all times and that they must clean up after their dog. I have found a bag of doggie droppings on the side of the street. It is very unpleasant. This is the most common complaint that I hear throughout the neighbourhood. The second is that of noise, particularly around the parks in the evening, but also from yard to yard. The complaint is that of excessive noise from stereos (both car and home). Please be considerate of everyone and turn the volume down.

I have 64 family emails from this neighbourhood to allow me (and the executive) to distribute newsletters and information specific to us. Please encourage your fellow residents to sign up to receive the newsletters via this medium. Shortly we will commission two of the younger members of the community to canvass door-to-door to gather email addresses to add to the list. I continue to promise that the addresses will be kept solely for the purpose of distributing neighbourhood news.

Community Yard Sale
Saturday June 7th, 2008

Maplewood on the Lakes will be hosting a community yard sale on Saturday June 7th, 2008 with the rain date being Sunday June 8th, 2008. White Hills residents will also be given an opportunity to partake in this wonderful opportunity to de-clutter and make room for summer!
In an effort to make this a successful event, we are asking that all participants pre-register. There is a $5.00 registration fee and the funds will go towards advertising to attract a significant amount of people to the sale for a fantastic outcome for everyone. In addition, pre-registering will ensure that the location of your sale be marked on the circulating flyers. The flyers will be distributed with a map of the participating locations and will also have specific addresses on the back side. This will help to ensure that there will be no yard/garage sale overlooked. We ask that all interested parties submit their information to:
prior to Sunday May 25th, 2008. Feel free to email any questions you may have as well. We look forward to getting this rolling and let’s make it a good one!!

Community Sign

With the addition of our community sign we are now able to get out important information to the neighborhood. Also if you would like to put up a notice on the sign please just e-mail Michele Boone at . For example if your Scout troop is having a bottle drive; it’s free advertising for our neighborhood. Also if you have a business and live in Maplewood you can
drop off a business card to be put on the back, Just drop it off to 176 Halfway Lake Drive. I believe the sign is a positive addition to our neighborhood. We have been able to welcome home local heroes, advise about local events, and even notify everyone about HRM errors. The sign is for everyone to use so take advantage of it.

Salty Dips Park

There is a new project in the works for a playpark to be built on the corner of Cedarcrest and Kaled Court in the Maplewood on the Lakes subdivision.   The name of the park will be: "Salty Dips Playground" and is centered around a Naval theme; the main play structure will be in the shape of a ship.  The equipment in the playpark is suitable for children ages 3 – 12 and includes such items as swings, motion toys, slides, climbing areas, etc.  The expected date for the beginning of construction is the end of June 2008 and we hope for it to be available for use soon after that, probably late July.

Many thanks to Todd Brayman of 38 Kaled Court, to Paul Madore and the remainder of the Executive Committee of the Maplewood on the Lakes Subdivision Resident’s Association plus Steve Oakley of the HRM for all their hard work in organizing this project so quickly!

BMX Bike Park

We are looking for kids and parents to help the HRM consultant construct the new bike park located at Patterson Park. The date is to be determined but it is essential that local neighbourhood people be involved as we will be responsible for the maintenance. The city will lead the construction and teach everyone to do the minor maintenance required.  Call Sean Litle @ 835 -1996 to sign up.
